My Experience in Ghana

11 July 2014

meganHello!  My name is Megan Ziolkowski, and I went to Ghana for the summer of 2013. While I was there I had the opportunity to teach at a school for the deaf. I loved teaching in Ghana. I especially loved using sign language, and being able to communicate with such amazing people. The people in Ghana are the happiest people I have ever met. They taught me so much, and I learned things that I could not have learned anywhere else.  I went to Ghana to be a teacher, but instead I was the one who was taught. I learned about things that matter most. Things like my family and my relationships with people.

I made a good friend in Ghana; his name is Enkata. I hung out with him many times throughout my stay in Ghana. He taught me how to live a simple life, and to be grateful for the things that make you happy. One particular day we were discussing our homes. He was very grateful for the place he lived and was very good at expressing his gratitude for everything he has. In our conversation he turned to me and said, “Why would I want a mansion, when I can only sleep in one room?” This statement struck me, and is something I will always remember. Enkata taught me so much about what really matters in life. It is my hope that I can one day be as humble and as loving as him.

My experience in Ghana has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. It has been one of the most challenging things I have ever accomplished, but the most rewarding thing as well.  It has changed my life forever. It is such a beautiful place, and will always have a place in my heart. I am so grateful for he the experiences I had, and the things that I learned. The things I learned have far surpassed any amount of money I had to pay to go there. Thank you Ghana, for being the best teacher I’ve have ever had.
